Tooth-coloured Fillings

What are Tooth Coloured Fillings?

Tooth-coloured fillings are the most popular choice for dental fillings and are made of a mixture (a.k.a. composite) of plastic resins and silica fillers. This mixture has many of the qualities of natural teeth. They have similar durability and appearance to our natural teeth.

Most people think of silver fillings when they think of fillings which is the traditional dental filling material. However, a mouth filled with shiny silver is not usually the look most people want inside their mouths. Tooth-coloured filling materials have been used for several decades and most patients prefer them over metal fillings because they better match the natural colour of your teeth and thus less noticeable.

How are Tooth-Coloured Fillings Placed?

First the tooth is prepared by cleaning out any areas of decay (i.e. cavities). Then, Dr Helen uses the composite material to fill in those areas completely which restores the structure of the tooth. To harden the material, a special light is used. This makes the material very hard and durable so it can withstand normal biting forces. Then the tooth is shaped and polished to a smooth finish so that it doesn’t rub up unusually against other teeth and affect one’s bite.

Benefits of Tooth-Coloured Fillings:

  • Look and feel like natural teeth
  • Colour is matched to surrounding teeth
  • Filling material is durable and long lasting
  • Cost less that gold fillings
  • Are the #1 choice for dental fillings
