Bridges

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges are replacement teeth options that have been around for decades. They can replace one tooth or a whole row of missing teeth.

Dental Bridges literally “bridge the gap” and Dr Helen can create custom bridges that match the shade of your natural teeth making them practically unrecognizable.

Types of dental bridges

There are four main types of dental bridges. Which type is best for you will depend on your overall oral health and health goals. The types of bridges include:

  1. Traditional dental bridge
  2. Cantilever dental bridge
  3. Maryland dental bridge
  4. Implant-supported bridge

To determine what type of bridge you need, Dr Helen will consider several factors, including:

  • How many teeth you are missing
  • The location and size of the gap needing to be bridged
  • The strength and condition of the teeth next to the gap
  • Your age
  • Your personal preferences

What are the pros and cons of a dental bridge?

There are many benefits that dental bridges offer. However, they are not for everyone and there are some downsides as well.

Benefits of Dental Bridges:

  • Natural appearing replacement tooth option
  • Restores natural speech and chewing function where missing teeth can make it difficult to eat or speak properly
  • Can be less expensive or invasive than other replacement teeth options.

Drawbacks of Dental Bridges:

  • Decay or trauma in the surrounding teeth can compromise a dental bridge.
  • Bridges can cause surrounding teeth to break if they are too weak to support the bridge.
  • The gums below the bridge can get inflamed and even infected if the bridge and gums are not properly cleaned and maintained
